Order Helmet on WhatsAppBali's motorcycle culture is one of the most visible aspects of the island. Scooters and motorcycles are the primary local transport, and renting a scooter is a common activity for tourists. The island's roads range from well-maintained coastal highways to single-track village lanes, steep mountain switchbacks, and unpaved agricultural tracks.
Road conditions vary dramatically. Kuta-Seminyak-Canggu coastal roads are generally well-surfaced but heavily trafficked and have unpredictable lane discipline. Ubud's inland roads are narrower with occasional sand or gravel patches from agricultural vehicles. Mountain roads toward Kintamani have sharp corners, altitude fog, and cold temperatures that contrast sharply with coastal Bali. North Bali roads around Lovina and Singaraja are quieter but longer with fewer facilities if something goes wrong.
The gear you need scales with the type of riding you plan. A week of scooter riding in Seminyak and Canggu requires different preparation than a multi-day adventure loop through all of Bali's regencies. This guide covers both scenarios.
Full Face Helmet
Maximum protection. Best for mountain rides, highland routes, longer distances. See our full-face range from Rp 350,000.
Modular/Flip-Up Helmet
Versatile for touring. Flip chin up at stops. Great for Bali's frequent coffee stops and temple visits.
Adventure/Dual Sport Helmet
For riders mixing sealed and unseal roads. Peak visor + goggle compatible. Best for Kintamani, Tabanan, North Bali.
Open Face Helmet
Popular for scooter riders in south Bali tourist areas. Good ventilation. Less protection than full face.
Motorcycle Gloves
Hands are the first contact point in a slide. Even light CE Level 1 gloves significantly reduce abrasion injuries. Short summer gloves work in Bali's heat.
Fingerless Gloves
Popular in Bali's heat for scooter riders. Better than nothing but less protection than full gloves.
Mesh Riding Jacket
CE-rated mesh jackets allow airflow in Bali's heat while providing armor at shoulders, elbows, and back. Significantly better than t-shirt for protection.
Light Textile Jacket
Many Bali riders wear lightweight textile jackets. Look for CE Level 1 armor inserts at minimum. Back protector insert adds significant spine protection.
Ankle Covering Footwear
Flip flops are popular in Bali but provide zero foot protection. At minimum, closed shoes covering the ankle. Dedicated moto boots are ideal for longer rides.
Motorcycle Boots
For serious riders. Look for CE EN 13634 certified boots. Essential for adventure riding on Bali's mountain tracks where ankle twist risk is higher.
Waterproof Rain Suit
Bali's rainy season (Nov-March) produces heavy rain with minimal warning. A packable rain suit in your bag is critical. Available at most Bali supermarkets for Rp 50,000-150,000.
Waterproof Gloves
Wet hands on controls are a safety issue. Waterproof overmitt gloves are inexpensive and pack easily.
