What do helmet certifications actually mean for Bali riders? Which do you legally need? Which offers the best protection? This guide explains every certification clearly.
Find a Certified HelmetIn Indonesia, SNI certification is mandatory by law. All helmets at Helmet Shop Bali carry SNI certification. ECE 22.06 is a higher standard and also accepted. DOT alone is NOT sufficient for legal riding in Indonesia. Snell is voluntary and provides the most rigorous test protocol.
Origin: Indonesia | Standard: SNI 1811:2007
SNI is Indonesia's mandatory national safety standard for motorcycle helmets. All helmets sold legally in Indonesia must carry the SNI mark. The SNI 1811:2007 standard tests impact attenuation, penetration resistance, retention system strength, and field of vision. SNI helmets are manufactured to these standards and bear the SNI logo on the shell or chin strap.
Key Facts for Bali Riders:
Origin: Europe (UNECE) | Standard: UNECE Regulation 22.06
ECE 22.06 is the current European safety standard for motorcycle helmets, updated in 2020 from the older 22.05 version. The .06 update added new tests including rotational impact tests (which measure oblique impacts that cause brain rotation injuries). ECE is voluntary in Indonesia but is considered more comprehensive than SNI alone. Most premium international helmets (AGV, Shoei, Arai, HJC, KYT NX Race) carry ECE 22.06.
Key Facts for Bali Riders:
Origin: United States | Standard: FMVSS 218
DOT is the American helmet safety standard, required for helmets sold in the United States. DOT uses a self-certification model - manufacturers self-test rather than submitting to independent laboratories. This makes DOT less rigorous to achieve than ECE. Many American brands (Bell, Icon) carry DOT certification. DOT is not recognized in Indonesia or Europe as an equivalent to SNI or ECE.
Key Facts for Bali Riders:
Origin: United States | Standard: Snell M2020
Snell is a private non-profit certification with arguably the strictest impact tests of any standard. Snell M2020 is updated every 5 years and applies higher impact velocities than ECE or DOT. Track racing organizations (particularly in the US and Japan) require Snell certification. Snell is voluntary and expensive to achieve - fewer helmets carry it. Arai and Shoei are known for maintaining Snell certification alongside ECE.
